Anodized Aluminum Sheets VS Brushed Aluminum Sheets
A detailed comparison of anodized and brushed aluminum sheets, covering their manufacturing processes, performance characteristics, applications, and cost differences. HC Aluminum offers both individual finishes and combined brushed-anodized aluminum shee
When selecting aluminum for decorative or industrial applications, anodized and brushed aluminum sheets are frequently discussed—and often confused. In reality, they represent different categories of surface treatment: the anodized aluminum focuses on electrochemical protection and coloring, while the brushed aluminum centers on the creation of physical textures. Consequently, they differ significantly in terms of performance, cost, and intended use. Drawing on over a decade of mass-production experience, HC Aluminum provides a clear comparison across key dimensions—process, performance, and application—to help clients make informed selection decisions.

The Essence of the Process: Physical Texture vs. Electrochemical Enhancement
The core of the brushed aluminum process is mechanical abrasion. Using abrasive belts or roller brushes, a directional texture—such as straight lines, random patterns, or wavy designs—is ground into the surface. This process alters only the surface topography; the chemical properties of the aluminum remain unchanged, and the base material’s inherent corrosion and wear resistance are largely preserved. The production workflow is relatively concise—typically involving leveling, brushing, cleaning, and passivation—resulting in shorter lead times, making it an ideal choice for orders requiring rapid delivery.
Anodized aluminum, by contrast, involves an electrochemical surface treatment. The aluminum sheet is submerged in an acidic electrolyte and subjected to an electric current, which grows a dense oxide film that is chemically bonded to the substrate. This oxide layer offers significantly greater hardness, corrosion resistance, and colorability than the surface of untreated aluminum. The production process is more complex, encompassing multiple stages—such as degreasing, alkaline etching, neutralization, anodizing, coloring, and sealing—requiring a longer production chain and more rigorous parameter control.
"Brushed anodized aluminum," a term frequently used in the industry, refers to a composite product created through a two-step process: first, the surface is textured via a brushing technique; subsequently, it undergoes anodizing to provide a protective, colored finish—combining a premium aesthetic with long-lasting durability.
Comparative Analysis of Key Performance Parameters
In terms of hardness and wear resistance, a standard (non-anodized) brushed aluminum sheet typically has a Vickers hardness of approximately HV 45–60, making it susceptible to scratches during daily use. In contrast, the oxide layer on an anodized aluminum sheet can reach a Vickers hardness of HV 280–350. This offers more than ten times the wear resistance of raw aluminum, ensuring the surface remains free of marks even after prolonged friction—making it ideal for high-contact applications.
Regarding weather and corrosion resistance, untreated brushed aluminum lacks a protective layer; it typically withstands only 48–96 hours in a neutral salt spray test and is prone to oxidation, blackening, or the formation of "white rust" when used outdoors. Anodized aluminum with a 10μm-thick oxide layer can endure over 500 hours in a neutral salt spray test, while a 20μm-thick layer can exceed 1,000 hours—extending the outdoor service life by a factor of 5 to 8.
In terms of color and aesthetics, raw brushed aluminum is generally limited to its natural metallic silver tone. Anodized aluminum, however, can be dyed or electrolytically colored to achieve dozens of shades—including black, gold, red, and bronze. Color consistency across batches can be maintained within a ΔE value of ≤1.5, offering superior decorative versatility to suit diverse design styles.
Application Scenarios and Selection Recommendations
Raw brushed aluminum offers lower costs and faster delivery times. It is well-suited for applications where long-term durability is not a primary concern, such as interior decorative panels, temporary display props, or industrial linings subject to minimal wear—making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious projects focused primarily on surface texture.
Anodized aluminum is the preferred choice for applications requiring robust weather and wear resistance, such as outdoor curtain walls, signage, equipment enclosures, and components used in coastal environments; it ultimately offers a lower total cost of ownership over the long term. For projects that demand both the tactile quality of a brushed texture and long-lasting protection, brushed anodized aluminum is the ideal solution.
We have worked with numerous clients in the Middle East on outdoor signage projects. Initially, some used standard brushed aluminum sheets, which began to darken and corrode after only 6–8 months of outdoor exposure. By switching to brushed, anodized aluminum sheets, these clients found that the material maintained a consistent appearance for over three years—ultimately resulting in a lower total lifecycle cost for their projects.
HC Aluminum offers brushed aluminum sheets, anodized aluminum sheets, and composite products combining both finishes. We provide a wide range of base alloys—including 1060, 5005, and 5052—in thicknesses from 0.3 mm to 6.0 mm. We also offer custom sizing (slitting/cutting) and color customization. Our products comply with the ASTM B580 standard and hold RoHS and REACH certifications. We support various trade terms, such as FOB and CIF, with a 7-day turnaround for standard specifications. Please contact us to request samples or detailed technical specifications; we are happy to provide tailored material recommendations based on your specific project requirements.
